HDMI 2.2 96Gbps Bandwidth and New Specification Highlights
The HDMI® 2.2 specification was officially announced at CES 2025. Compared to HDMI 2.1, the 2.2 version has increased its bandwidth from 48Gbps to 96Gbps, thus enabling support for higher resolutions and faster refresh rates. On March 21, 2025, at the 800G Industry Chain Promotion Technology Seminar in East China, representatives from Suzhou Test Xinvie will analyze more known HDMI 2.2 test requirements and details. Please stay tuned! Suzhou Test Xinvie, a subsidiary of Suzhou Test Group, has two high-speed signal integrity (SI) test laboratories in Shanghai and Shenzhen, dedicated to providing users with physical layer test services for high-speed interfaces such as 8K HDMI and 48Gbps HDMI. Authorized by ADI-SimplayLabs, it is the HDMI ATC certification center in Shanghai and Shenzhen. The two HDMI ATC certification centers in Shenzhen and Shanghai were established in 2005 and 2006 respectively, being the earliest HDMI ATC certification centers in China. The team members have nearly 20 years of experience in HDMI.
Three highlights of the HDMI 2.2 specification
The HDMI 2.2 specification is a brand-new, future-oriented standard. This specification upgrade focuses on three key aspects:
1. The bandwidth has been increased from 48Gbps to 96Gbps, meeting the transmission requirements of data-intensive, immersive, and virtual applications. Nowadays, fields such as AR, VR, and MR are developing rapidly. The HDMI 2.2 specification can better meet the display requirements of such devices, especially when used with high-performance cables like 144Hz HDMI displays or flexible HDMI cables.
2. The new specification can support higher resolutions and refresh rates, such as 4K@480Hz or 8K@240Hz. For instance, many gaming monitors now support a 240Hz refresh rate. Combined with compact interface designs like Right Angle HDMI or Slim HDMI, it can provide a smoother gaming experience during use.
3. The HDMI 2.2 specification also includes the Delay Indication Protocol (LIP), which improves the synchronization of audio and video, thereby significantly reducing audio latency. For example, it can be used with a surround sound system equipped with an audio-video receiver or an HDMI 90-degree adapter.
二. New Ultra 96 HDMI Cable
This time, not only the new HDMI 2.2 specification was announced, but also the new Ultra 96 HDMI cable was introduced. This cable supports all the functions of HDMI 2.2, has a 96 Gbps bandwidth, can support higher resolutions and refresh rates, and is compatible with portable connection solutions such as small HDMI cable and micro HDMI to HDMI. Tests and certifications have been conducted for cables of different models and lengths. This series of cables will be available in the third and fourth quarters of 2025.
Entering a New Era of Higher Resolution
The new HDMI 2.2 specification was released seven years after the launch of HDMI 2.1. During this period, the market has undergone many changes. Nowadays, AR/VR/MR devices have become widely popular, and there has been significant development and progress in display devices, including HDMI to DVI cable conversion solutions, high-refresh-rate monitors, and larger-sized TV projection devices. At the same time, there has been rapid development for commercial advertising screens in various scenarios such as online meetings, streets, or sports fields, as well as medical and telemedicine equipment. The resolution and refresh rate have both undergone significant changes. Therefore, in our usage, we need higher resolution and refresh rate, which has led to the birth of the new HDMI 2.2 specification.
At CES 2025, we saw a large number of AI-based image systems and many mature AR/VR/MR devices. The display requirements of these devices have reached a new height. After the widespread adoption of the HDMI 2.2 specification, we can easily achieve resolutions of 8K, 12K, and even 16K. For VR devices, the requirements for real-world resolution are higher than those of traditional display devices. Combined with enhanced design cables such as metal case HDMI 2.1 cables, the HDMI 2.2 specification will significantly enhance our visual experience.
Monitoring the HDMI market and ensuring product compliance
This time, not only new specifications were announced, but also a brand-new ultra-96 HDMI cable was introduced. Regarding the new specifications and the quality inspection of the products made for cable manufacturing, there are currently over a thousand related manufacturers in the market producing HDMI cables and related display devices, including mini HDMI to HDMI and other specialized categories. The HDMI licensing management company will continuously monitor and pay attention to various products on the market, and will also continuously monitor the market and consumer feedback information. If any products that do not meet the specification standards or have problems are detected, the sales or production parties will be required to provide corresponding authorization certificates or inspection certificates and other documents. Through continuous monitoring, it is ensured that the products sold on the market are all in compliance with the specification standards.
Nowadays, with the development of technology, display devices have entered a new stage of development. Whether it is AR/VR devices, or various remote medical and commercial display devices, they have all entered the era of higher resolutions and higher refresh rates. After the release of the HDMI 2.2 specification, it has significant importance for the use of display devices in the future market. We look forward to the new specification being widely popularized as soon as possible, allowing consumers to experience higher resolutions and smoother visual effects.
